I just had the chance to watch this movie at the Shanghai International Film Festival and I went in without knowing what I was getting into as the tickets were purchased for me and I was just tagging along.

Well, it could not have gone better. As a German, I only have a vague knowledge about the social problems that New Zealand is facing but that didn't matter at all. The acting was outstanding to the extend that Cliff Curtis will be on my radar from now on. The movie was beautifully shot and felt very close to reality.The story, which is biographical, brought tears to my eyes.

It revolves around an emotionally unstable Maori named Genesis who has spent a significant part of his life in a mental hospital and who happens to be somewhat of a chess genius. Genesis is granted the chance to leave the mental hospital under the condition that a family member will take care of him. His brother, who leads a vicious gang out in the New Zealand country site, as his last resort is more or less up for the duty and agrees to take him in. What Genesis lacks in social skill he makes up for with enthusiasm. Focused on staying positive to prevent another relapse, which would surely mean the end of his freedom, he joins a local chess club for troubled children and young adults. Genesis quickly breathes life into the club with his addictive enthusiasm and by being the living proof that you don't need a college degree to be smart.His character mesmerized me because he was simply modest, honest and wholehearted in an environment where people with these qualities don't really thrive. 


All and all, a truly memorable experience, even if you are not very familiar with the culture in New Zealand!

James Dean does not look like James Dean - more like Leonardo di Caprio in What's eating Gilbert Grape.

Robert Pattinson's acting skills were not up to the task either - the photographer did not come alive in this movie.

I found it very hard to build any empathy for any of the persons on the screen. The only interesting scene is the Ben Kingsley scene.

There is no action - at all. At the same time, the movie takes itself extremely serious - pretentious is what I would say. Melodramatic Jazz instrumentals accompany boring monologues of the James Dean-not-look-alike.


I walked out after an hour, stumbled on this in a sneak - definitely not amusing. Maybe only for die-hard James Dean fans, if you can tolerate the miscast main character. Or if you are a fan of the "iconic" James Dean shots (which I am not - hype is not my thing.)

Modernized and polished entry to the Jurassic Park series picks up 22 years after the original Steven Spielberg SyFy thriller with a fully functional prehistoric amusement park that is trying to pick up their attendance numbers by splicing the DNA of their animals in order to create a new attraction to bring in more customers. With this, they manage to create a dinosaur that is much bigger that the signature T-Rex but also much more aggressive, much smarter and much more territorial as well. So of course it does not take much time for this thing to break out of it's habitat to cause death and destruction in it's wake. It's then up to park consultant Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and company to stop this mega dinosaur from killing everyone on the island.

While the set up is predictable as well as it's outcome, the movie still provides a fun two hours of distraction. The problem is however is that outside of Chris Pratt, whose playing an intelligent variation of his swagger character from " Guardians" No one in this movie is very interesting or likable with the slight exception of Vincent D'Onofrio, who can read a phone book and make it interesting. The script is cringe worthy in a lot of places and while technology has come very far from the original, good storytelling is far and few between. "Jurassic World" still does manage to offer a lot of scary moments of sheer terror and does provide some comic relief, which is a huge step up from the last movie of the series(Jurassic Park 3)but does not have the genuine spectacle and heart that drove Steven Spielberg's first two movies in the series (The original Jurassic Park and The Lost World : Jurassic Park).


All and all, it's a decent ride that somewhat redeems the Jurassic Park series but they need shoot higher next time other than just be a decent follow up.

To all the miserable people who have done everything from complain about the dialogue, the budget, the this and the that....who wants to hear it? IF you missed the point of this beyond-beautiful movie, that's your loss. The rest of us who deeply love this movie do not care what you think. I am a thirthysomething guy who has seen thousands of movies in my life, and this one stands in its own entity, in my book. It was not supposed to be a documentary, or a completely factual account of what happened that night. It is the most amazing love story ever attempted. I know that it is the cynical 90's and the millennium has everyone in a tizzy, but come on. Someone on this comments board complained that it made too much money! How lame is that? It made bundles of money in every civilized country on the planet, and is the top grossing film in the planet. I will gladly side with the majority this time around. Okay, cynics, time to crawl back under your rock, I am done.

Why do I want to write the 234th comment on The Shawshank Redemption? I am not sure - almost everything that could be possibly said about it has been said. But like so many other people who wrote comments, I was and am profoundly moved by this simple and eloquent depiction of hope and friendship and redemption. 

The only other movie I have ever seen that effects me as strongly is To Kill a Mockingbird. Both movies leave me feeling cleaner for having watched them.

I didn't intend to see this movie at all: I do not like prison movies and I don't normally watch them. I work at a branch library and one day as I was checking The Shawshank Redemption out to one of our older patrons, she said to me, "Whenever I feel down or depressed, I check out this movie and watch it and it always makes me feel better." At the time, I thought that was very strange. One day there was nothing on TV except things I absolutely would not watch under any circumstance or things that I had seen too many times already. I remembered what she said, so I watched it. I have watched it many many times since then and it gets better with every showing.

No action, no special effects - just men in prison uniforms talking to each other.

The Shawshank Redemption and To Kill a Mockingbird are the best movies I have ever seen. I do not judge it by it's technical merits - I don't really care about that. I have read that Citizen Kane or The Godfather or this or that movie is the best movie ever made. They may have the best technique or be the most influential motion pictures ever made, but not the best. The best movies are ones that touch the soul. It takes a movie like The Shawshank Redemption to touch the soul.

from the start of the movie until the end contain discomfort atmosphere with violent and some nudity.The story is quite confusing and I regret that I watch this movie.But after me and my friend have some discuss about this story it quite give us a lot of idea and what director want to teach us about so we give another shot for this story and we got what this story is to remind something for Japan people.

The soundtrack is really various and their production is beautiful(even though cg is bad in action) Really recommend for someone who could open- mind for some weird story that is hard to understand.

This movie is really good for someone who study art and who love plot twist or complicate story.

I'm not a professional in film reviews, to begin with. I'm just an University student who's got an enormous passion for cinema. It was years since a movie moved my soul in such a profound way. I was stunned when I saw that the movie summed up a 7.5 rating here on IMDb. I thought about this fact for some days, then I kind of make up my answer. "Youth" is the symbol of many struggles in cinema and in people's mind. American movies and many Europeans ones as well are so easy to like, just because they're easy to follow. They show facts, actions, somehow explained by words and some ideas. Ideas are like the salt we put on on our meals to make them tasty. Films like "Youth" are the exact opposite: words and ideas are the "meal", and a few actions are the "salt". Actually all the actions are at the end of the movie, they could be perceived as a climax, but they're more like the conclusion of complex exchanges of ideas throughout the movie. I won't comment about technical features, because I don't have the expertise to do it. I just say that the soundtrack is somewhere near perfection, editing as well and there some beautifully shot scenes. As I said, my concern is not about that. "Youth" make the viewer think about life, old age, ethics, it accompanies us through some beautiful ideas, and this is where all pros and cons stay. This movie doesn't look for easy ways to impress the viewer, to make him/her somehow forcefully interested to what the screen shows, it requests an open mind and what I ironically call "the 51st shade": a fetish to thoughts, not only to material things. Some people don't like Sorrentino because they consider him a "radical chic intellectual". It is a righteous choice to be against "intellectualism" whatsoever, but it is as well righteous to be against ignorance.

As the shortest, sharpest and most stormily violent of William Shakespeare's tragedies, "Macbeth" may be the most readily cinematic: The swirling mists of the Highlands, tough to fabricate in a theater, practically rise off the printed page. So it's odd that, while "Romeo and Juliet" and "Hamlet" get dusted off at least once a generation by filmmakers, the Scottish Play hasn't enjoyed significant bigscreen treatment since Roman Polanski's admirable if tortured 1971 version. The wait for another may be even longer after Justin Kurzel's scarcely improvable new adaptation: Fearsomely visceral and impeccably performed, it's a brisk, bracing update, even as it remains exquisitely in period. Though the Bard's words are handled with care by an ideal ensemble, fronted by Michael Fassbender and a boldly cast Marion Cotillard, it's the Australian helmer's fervid sensory storytelling that makes this a Shakespeare pic for the ages — albeit one surely too savage for the classroom.

Robert De Niro, as a retired 70 year old who re-enters the work force and proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that oldies are still goodies….also proves just why he is a star as he shines so bright in this movie as to be blinding. He is perfection. There are some actors that the older they get, the better they get, and De Niro is most certainly one. Anne Hathaway, as the genius behind a too-fast growing company is playing what I consider one of her best roles yet. And Rene Russo is still gorgeous as ever. I was impressed, also, by Anders Holm who played Hathaway's husband. But then, actually, I was impressed with everyone in this movie. There really wasn't a single thing or character I would change in this one, and that's saying something. The casting, the plot, the dialogue…and fancy this, it was a funny, touching, enjoyable picture with NO foul language, NO overly-suggestive crude garbage that usually just makes the audience cringe. It was well written, well -acted, and well presented. All rare these days where just the writing ability seems to have dwindled into the dirt. This one is evidence that there are still writers and creators who have talent out there. More movie producers should make a point of seeking and finding them! This is a fun movie that you are going to be recommending to everyone within reading or hearing distance. One of the best films we've seen in some time and left us all smiling as we left the building.

"Hotel Transylvania" is truly an excellent family movie with all elements of success included: good script,perfect entertainment,wonderful direction and great comedy.

I saw it with my girlfriend after hearing this film has been achieving international success.

Honestly "Hotel Transylvania" was extremely funny for adults and the movie theater was crowded. People were looking for a real comedy that would make them forget their own problems and the movie was absolutely hilarious from the beginning till the end.

The voice acting was stunning and honestly this lovely film is worth seeing for all ages,you will move into another fantastic world for 90 minutes.


I am not surprised at all why this movie has been number 1 in most counties around the world.

The Martian is a new Ridley Scott classic, featuring his best work in years, the best performance I've ever seen from Matt Damon, an outstanding supporting cast, a surprisingly funny screenplay from Daredevil creator Drew Goddard, and a great narrative that ties the film together beautifully. 

As expected with Ridley Scott films, the film itself is visually stunning. The landscape of Mars looks absolutely breathtaking, and the scenes aboard the Hermes and back on Earth are just as sharp in detail and scope. The way he chose to make this film made it almost seem like an exceptionally made biopic. Many times during this film, I legitimately believed that Mark Watney was a real, living, person that was actually stranded on Mars for many months alone. It's Cast Away meets Apollo 13, and this marriage is crafted beautifully. 

Matt Damon is absolutely brilliant in this film. He plays Watney with so much optimism that it actually makes the depressing aspect of the film not as depressing for me. However, when he has to put on his dramatic chops in certain scenes, he truly commits to the drama of the situation, and that right there is true Ridley Scott suspense for you. The supporting cast, everyone involved, all do great work as well. Jeff Daniels, Jessica Chastain, particularly Chiwetel Ejiofor. He is one of the best actors working today, and this movie and 12 Years a Slave shows how far he's come. 

The most surprisingly element about this movie though was the screenplay. The film is hilarious in some parts, in fact I'd argue that it's funnier than most comedies that have come out this year. What makes to movie unique to me was Watney's optimistic point of view. He believes that he isn't going to die on Mars, and this transforms this rather depressing situation into something comical instead. But when you really think about it, this is a very personal film about some people coming together to save somebody. That's it. And in today's world, it's nice to hear an story about people coming together to save one of their own. 


I have nothing bad to say about The Martian. It's the best film I've seen all year.

I watched it like, 20 minutes ago, so this review is as fresh as i can make it :) To say it very short: It was a feel-good movie, that should have been given a different name.

As is traditional with my reviews, i'll start with the good sides of the movie.

The movie took little to no time to develop. Within the first 10 minutes stuff already goes down. Within 15 minutes, sh*t has already hit the fan. So you don't need to wait for stuff to get interesting.

There were a lot of moments that were really cool. Those feel-good moments, where you can sit there and think: "Ah that was cool!" "WOW did you see that?" "Oh man, that character was bad-ass there!" Those kind of moments. There were plenty of them so unless you have no feeling of suspense, you won't walk out of the theater without anything to remember.

The acting overall was also pretty nice. Oscar-worthy? No, hell no. But it was good nonetheless. The one actor/actress did it better than the other but i cannot complain.

The visual effects and make-up all looked pretty darn good so you are also in for a visual ride. Everything did look like 50-shades of brown, but since the whole movie takes place in a desert-like environment, you can't really argue with that.

Now for the bad parts. I'll try to keep everything a secret and not reveal anything.

There were too many moments that were basically the same: They go to this place, find out stuff is bad, and have to run. And this goes on 6 times in a row. Why do they call it the Scorch Trials? Call it the Running Men.

As i said before, there are a lot of feel-good moments in the film. But in between those moments, there is not a whole lot to see. This film basically thrives on those moments and tries to keep the scenes between those moments as short as possible. 

Since the movie takes no time to develop, there is little to no introduction of characters. Aidan Gillen (Janson) (and Petyr Balish from GoT) has a pretty impact-full role, but gets a 2 minute intro and that is it.

There were also plenty of moments where i thought: "Seriously? Are you kidding?" "Wait what? Do they even....?" I cannot say what those moments exactly were, so sorry for that, but there were plenty of those moments, and unless you are not paying attention, you WILL notice them.

All in all, the movie was entertaining, but very flawed. As i now say for the 6th time, there were a lot of feel-good moments, but also plenty of weird moments, weird choices the characters make, and once again: Thomas is the most important character of them all, and only he can save the day. SERIOUSLY? Why can't this other dude do something? Isn't it so that Thomas is not the only one in the team? Ah, screw it. I'll watch Vikings again.


In total i can give it a 6.5, maybe a 7, but no more than that. I have no idea if the book is any better, so don't judge me for that :)
