Films are like visiting a city. Mainstream movies cover the big attraction: Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame Cathedra, and Musée du Louvre. Indie films take you through the back streets and occasionally you get a tour of the underbelly of a city. "Nasty Baby" by filmmaker Sebastián Silva takes you on a back ally tour of the character of ordinary people. We all like to think we know what we will do in hypothetical situations. The truth is often we don't. This movie starts off pleasant enough with likable, real character; but from the start there is a slow burn that is building towards some unwanted destination. This movie takes you around the big attractions of a city and delivers you via the characters in places you would never expect to visit or would want to go. Storyline

Three hours outside of Addis Ababa, a bright 14-year-old girl is on her way home from school when men on horses swoop in and kidnap her. The brave Hirut grabs a rifle and tries to escape, but ends up shooting her would-be husband. In her village, the practice of abduction into marriage is common and one of Ethiopia's oldest traditions. Meaza Ashenafi, an empowered and tenacious young lawyer, arrives from the city to represent Hirut and argue that she acted in self-defense. Meaza boldly embarks on a collision course between enforcing civil authority and abiding by customary law, risking the continuing work of her women's legal-aid practice to save Hirut's life. The story gave distorted and untruthful accounts about the lawyer. The film falsely portraying as if Meaza Ashenafi stood for Aberash; where in reality it is Mrs Etagegnehu Lemessa (who is now deceased) who battled for Aberash Bekele at the court in Arsi, Asella in 1999. Etagegnhu Lemessa, a professional lawyer,working for Ethiopian women lawyers association as a volunteer, arrives from the city to represent Aberash and argue that she acted in self-defense. The movie Difret changed the story as if Meaza Ashenafi fought as a lawyer. Searchfor original BBC documentary series following Aberash Bekele case trial. Based on a true story means that movie was based on actual events that happened not deceiving public with Fictitious entries.

Storyline

A drama that tracks the story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement, women who were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal State. These women were not primarily from the genteel educated classes, they were working women who had seen peaceful protest achieve nothing. Radicalized and turning to violence as the only route to change, they were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality - their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives. Maud was one such foot soldier. The story of her fight for dignity is as gripping and visceral as any thriller, it is also heart-breaking and inspirational. Written by Production.

A fundamentalist feminist glossing over of a nuanced historical series of events, which fails to show the real work for equal voting rights (which most people, men included, did not have at this point in history) was done by the suffragists, composed of men & women, who lobbied for 1 person = 1 vote...rather than the openly racist suffragettes who only wanted white, upper class women to have the vote. 

At this point in history, usually only white, upper class men holding large property holdings could vote (although some women holding equivalent property ex. Widows running a business, with a number of employees could and DID vote. )

Remember, almost all of the men & women who died on the fields (& hospitals) in World War One did NOT have the right to vote...and even today, voting in most countries is intrinsically tied to military service (i.e. The draft), an obligation that almost always only applies to men. So for the most part,

women get the Right to vote without the Obligation to serve...except in Israel, and most non Western countries. 

Avoid this movie, and do yourself a favour by doing a little reading of non-feminist studies peer reviewed historical papers...truth is stranger (& more enlightening) than fiction.
